** Update: Garcia pulled it together with a one-under 35 on the back nine. His five-over 76 was easily under 100. **
There was a lot of chatter in the run-up to this U.S. Open about whether Justin Timberlake, Tony Romo, Matt Lauer or some dude from Omaha could break 100 at Torrey Pines. No one expected Sergio Garcia to be part of the conversation.
The fiery Spaniard, who was on many experts’ short list to win this week, went double-bogey, bogey, birdie, par, bogey, bogey, double-bogey, par, par through nine holes. That’s six-over-par 41. Or over and out.
