Brave Monty

I have to admit, I didn’t even know Monty was in the U.S. Open field until studying the list a little closer and spying his name. Colin Montgomerie. Monty. The Big Man would clearly have a few major championship trophies on his mantle if not for bad luck and his own shortcomings. The 2006 U.S. Open will always be remembered for Phil Mickelson’s meltdown at Winged Foot, but Monty had his own implosion, standing in the middle of the 18th fairway, needing a par to win and coming out of a 7-iron and pushing it into the spinach. "What kind of shot is that?" Monty asked as the ball sailed far right of his intended target. The kind of shot that leads to a double-bogey 6 and loses the U.S. Open. Best of luck this week, Monty. You’ll need it.
