(Phil Mickelson: Ross Kinnaird/Getty Images; Big Bertha Alpha driver: Michael Chini) Apparently the days of Phil Mickelson playing without a driver could be coming to an end as Lefty is reportedly very excited about the new Callaway Big Bertha Alpha driver he has in his bag. According to various sources Mickelson says he's hitting the new big stick significantly straighter than any driver he's had in the past and close to 25 yards longer than his famed 3-wood.
“As I look back on 2013, I played some of my best golf and had some huge breakthroughs, but I did most of it without a driver,” Mickelson said. “This year we have the best driver I’ve ever hit that lowers my spin rate like my 3-wood. I drive it longer and straighter with my driver than I did with my 3-wood. It’s a whole different weapon in my arsenal now."
Mickelson will be putting his new weapon in play this week as he kicks off his 2014 season at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.
