Tiger Woods might not be playing golf on Tour, but he’s still contributing to Team USA.
U.S. Ryder Cup team captain Davis Love III says that Woods, one of his four vice captains, has been texting him ideas for pairing and picks to add to the 12-man roster when the Americans battle the Europeans at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn., in September.
“He’s already picked his four (vice captains),” Love told Sky Sports. “I can’t tell you who they are, but he knows who he wants to watch and who he wants to manage and who he’ll get along with.”
After the Barclays, the top eight players on the U.S. points list will automatically qualify for the team, and Love will add three captain’s picks on Sept. 11 and and a fourth and final pick on Sept. 25.
Right now, those top eight players are Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Phil Mickelson, Jimmy Walker, Brooks Koepka, Zach Johnson, J.B. Holmes and Brandt Snedeker, leaving established stars like Bubba Watson, Patrick Reed, Matt Kuchar and Rickie Fowler in need of a pick to make the squad.
