One of the last remaining men-only golf clubs might soon admit female members.
According to The Sunday Times, a decision on female membership at Muirfield, the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, will be reached through a postal ballot. The report says “insiders believe this makes a vote in favour of admitting women more likely as it will encourage more members to take part in vote.”
The Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews and Royal St. George’s Golf Club decided to admit women in 2014 and 2015 respectively, making Muirfield and Royal Troon the only remaining men-only clubs on the British Open rota. There were reports that Royal Troon was considering admitting female members last year in response to added pressure in advance of its staging of the 2016 British Open.
Muirfield has hosted 16 British Opens, the last in 2013, which was won by Phil Mickelson.
