2015 PGA Championship: Watch Rory McIlroy Make an Up-and-Down Par From the Water at Whistling Straits

August 13, 2015

Rory McIlroy’s relatively steady start to the PGA Championship (even par through three holes) took a turn for the adventurous on the par-5 fifth Thursday, but it resulted in a splash-landing par save.

The world No. 1, competing for the first time since the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay, blasted a 307-yard drive on the fifth hole well right of the fairway. From there, he pitched sideways out of a bunker back into the fairway but missed the green with his next shot. His ball came to rest in shallow water left of the green, and instead of taking a penalty stroke and dropping another ball, McIlroy was determined to play it as it lies. So the 26-year-old rolled up one pant leg and dug in.

The resulting shot was incredible and, after his absence, helped remind viewers and fans just how good Rory is. He snuck in his 13-foot putt for par for good measure. Check it out below.
