Wilson Staff D-100 Fairway Woods
Category: Game-Improvement Fairway Woods
WE TESTED: 3 (15°), 5 (18°), 7 (21°) with Matrix Ozik HD 5.1 graphite shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: These woods are 35 to 40 grams lighter than many standard-weight offerings. Ten grams get shifted from the crown to a lower, more rearward position to increase launch and spin.
PLAYABILITY: Launches shots higher than most fairway woods off the short grass and the tee; shots can be maneuvered from right to left.
ACCURACY/FORGIVENESS: It shines here — straight-hitting club that generates little sidespin, unless you dial it up yourself; ease of hitting from the fairway results in one straight shot after another.
DISTANCE: Comfortable, repeatable distances; a few testers find them comparable to their own woods.
FEEL: The woods don't give off the impression of being super light — clubhead drives through the ball and rewards you with a "whack" sound; stable, responsive head is full of information.
LOOK: Low-profile head with shallow face is very inviting to use from the fairway; the alignment logo and contrasting white scoring lines help you to set the head down square and center the ball on the face.
One of the shortest clubs in the bunch; impact is too loud and metallic-sounding for some testers; others are turned off by the excessive graphics on the white shaft.
BOTTOM LINE: It's quite forgiving and super easy to hit off the fairway. The D-100 is a smooth operator that works hard so you don't have to.
