Mizuno MP-54 Irons
Category: Better-Player Irons
Price: $999, steel
WE TESTED: 3-PW with True Temper Dynamic Gold steel shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: The 3- to 7-irons have a milled “Pocket Cavity” to aid forgiveness and bolster launch.
PLAYABILITY: It can do it all — think it, then hit it; penetrating, mid-to-low trajectory can be bent at will and demolishes headwinds; “Pocket Cavity” adds muscle for long irons and bad lies without sacrificing maneuverability.
ACCURACY/FORGIVENESS: No pin is off-limits; reliable, consistent flight that’s laser-guided when caught pure; some testers are pleasantly surprised by the forgiveness of the cavity-back 3-7 irons.
DISTANCE CONTROL: Not crazy long, but respectable — built more for control than power; covers misses better than similarly slim irons; precise on partial shots.
FEEL: Soft, solid and stable; muscleback feel in a cavity-back; well-balanced and just plain smooth—impact on good shots is worth the occasional stinger on bad ones.
LOOK: Chrome finish with silky smooth lines; slightly longer and thicker than previous MPs, but most testers find it more reassuring than clumsy.
A demanding club that doesn’t coddle bad swings and penalizes misses — you’ll need to log range time to get the most out of the MP-54; mishits won’t feel good; some guys don’t like the added head size.
BOTTOM LINE: One of the best irons in the test. If you’re skilled enough, the MP-54 can make a good player great.
