WE TESTED: 9.5° (adjusts 8° to 11°) with Matrix VLCT ST graphite shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: The “flip weight” in the forward position launches the ball lower, with 300 rpm less spin than in the rear position.
DISTANCE: Adequate off the tee but definitely not the longest of the group; similar length to the testers’ normal drivers—not overwhelming distance; solid strikes provide serviceable yardage.
ACCURACY/FORGIVENESS: The Fly-Z+ finds the fairway as long as you make decent contact; fairly consistent on better swings; many say the club is average compared with others tested.
FEEL: A loud crack at impact gives a sense that you smoked it; the head carries enough weight to tell you exactly where it is during the swing; never unduly harsh, even on misses.
PLAYABILITY: Good, boring ball flight holds strong, even in tough or windy conditions; gives you the ability to work the ball on command; the movable CG weight can turn a low-spin driver into a mid-spin driver in mere seconds.
LOOK: Solid, square setup at address; testers like the color options—orange head makes them feel like Rickie Fowler; clean lines are easy to aim.
Some testers complain of a lack of overall distance compared to other models; muted feel isn’t a favorite; not everyone embraces the bold color scheme.
BOTTOM LINE: The Fly-Z+ driver is serviceable but not outstanding in any one area.

Cobra’s Fly-Z+ driver, for scratch players to 15-handicappers, utilizes a clever front-back weighting system to optimize CG location. The 15-gram weight [an aluminum shell filled with tungsten nickel] can be moved between the middle of the sole and the rear. According to company testing, the forward CG position [with the gold-colored weight closer to the face] creates a penetrating, low-spin flight, while the back position launches the ball higher with 300 rpm more spin. To enhance ball speeds on mis-hits, the thin, forged titanium clubface includes a “Speed Channel” around the edges.
You might think the channel creates more speed because of increased face flex on those shots. Not so. It actually boosts speed because mass that’s removed from the face gets redistributed, which increases the club’s MOI by approximately 10 to 15 percent on mis-hits. The 460 cc head features “MyFly” technology, which allows eight loft adjustments between 8° and 11°, plus the “SmartPad” sole, which is designed to maintain a square clubface angle even as loft adjustments are made. Designed with a technology called FlipZone the Cobra Fly-Z+ features an extremely low CG location that can be moved to the front or back of the clubhead via a 15-gram weight in the sole. When set to the front location the Fly-Z+ produces a mid-launch angle with extremely low spin and a relatively boring launch angle and when set to the rear location a mid-launch flight with approximately 400 RPM’s of additional spin is produced for higher ballflight and additional carry.
“The Fly-Z+ driver features the lowest CG of any adjustable weight driver on the market,” said Tom Olsavsky, VP of R&D. “The new FlipZone provides golfers with two different flight paths in one head – allowing golfers to play what is best for their game. The result is one unique, performance and technology driven golf club that is truly game changing.”
In addition to FlipZone technology the Fly-Z+ driver also features a new Speed Channel around the perimeter of the clubface that makes it thinner, leading to faster ball speeds across a larger portion of the hitting area. A forged E9 Zone Face technology that increases the size of the sweet spot further enhances distance on off-center hits, while a carbon fiber crown and sole sections save a significant amount of weight that is repositioned in more useful areas of the clubhead.
Other features of the Fly-Z+ driver include multiple custom tuning technologies (MyFly8 and Smart Pad) that provide loft and trajectory settings that range from 8-11 degrees. Five colors including black, white, blue, orange, and red are available for players who want to stand out from the crowd. A Matrix VLCT ST 60g shaft comes standard but multiple premium shaft offerings including the Aldila Tour Green, Aldila Tour Blue, and Matrix White Tie are available at no additional charge.
