Laird Small, GOLF Magazine Top 100 Teacher and director of the Pebble Beach Golf Academy is literally "over the moon," regarding the storied resort's new state of the art practice facility.
"I'm going into my 27th year at Pebble and we've never had a facility befitting the resort," says Small. "It took awhile but now we have one of the best teaching and practice facilities in the country. There simply are not enough adjectives to describe it. It's fabulous."
What Small is raving about is Pebble's recently opened golf academy and practice facility, which sits just across the street from the old and rather pedestrian practice area. Featuring a 350-yard, double sided natural grass range, the new facility (which is twice the size as the one it replaces) also includes multiple target greens and bunkers, a 40,000-square-foot short game area complete with more bunkers, dedicated chipping areas and a 4,500-square-foot practice green.
In addition to the impressive outdoor layout, Pebble's new academy offers a 3,000-square-foot building that houses three different teaching studios where players can dial in each and every part of their game, including thier clubs (two of the studios focus on full swing, one on putting). Technologies utilized at the facility include a robotic swing trainer, 3D motion capture analysis, computerized putting stoke analysis, and an indoor simulator, among others.
"In just the first week or so we've already had incredible feedback from guests," comments Small. "People are wowed by it. I have no doubt that the new academy and facilities are going to really enhance the Pebble Beach experience for our guests. Not only will they be able to enjoy one of the finest golf courses in the world but will also have the opportunity to improve their relationship with the game. We help give people the ability to self-correct on the course, which can only make their playing experience more enjoyable."
