It's a little before seven on Thursday morning, the last full day of the 2010 World Amateur Handicap Championship, the first day of the 2010 college football season. I am headed to the lobby of the Sheraton Myrtle Beach Convention Center when the door of my elevator opens at the 9th floor. Two sleepy-eyed young men step on, each sporting an eye-popping orange and blue golf bag with CLEMSON stitched down one side.
"Go Tigers," I say. They look at me quizzically.
"Clemson fans?" I ask.
The conversation is going nowhere. In halting English, one of the men explains that they hail from a small city north of Rome. They have been attending the World Am for a couple of years, and they keep coming back because they have such a great time. But why, I ask, the allegiance to Clemson?
"We liked the color of the bag," says one. -- Mark Godich
