Sign of the times: No courtesy cars at San Diego Open

HONOLULU - The glum economy hit home for players who read a sign posted in the Sony Open locker room at Waialae Country Club:
"Courtesy cars will not be provided during the week of the San Diego Open at Torrey Pines. The San Diego has partnered with Enterprise Rent-A-Car/National Car Rental to provide discounted weekly rates."
Long one of the premier events on Tour, the Torrey Pines tournament has been the usual season-opener for Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, but it looks increasingly likely that that event will go off without a sponsor in 2010. The PGA Tour is expected to pay prizemoney and pick up other costs on a one-time basis.
