SOUTHPORT, England -- Justin Rose's name appeared on a lot of betting tickets when the 137th Open Championship began this week, but after enjoying lunch, he'll have plenty of time to watch the final groups play Royal Birkdale from the comforts of a sofa.
Rose was the third man off the course today and signed for a 73 that left him near the bottom of the leaderboard.
Along with many others, he plans to cheer for The Shark. "I'll be rooting for Greg," he said. "I think everyone will be rooting for him. It would be cool for him to end his career with this. He could retire a happy man."
Birkdale was the scene for Rose's miraculous finish in 1998, a hole-out from the left rough on the 18th to give him a tie for fourth place as an amateur.
"It's just a great course," he said. "I'd rank it as one of my favorites in the rota. I don't know why it creates so much drama but it does."
But unfortunately for Rose, a Ryder Cup hopeful, he won't be a part of any drama here this year.
