Course of Style: Adidas pushes the elegance envelope with new golf shoe

The top of the line just got higher.

Check out the new Adidas golf shoe, the adiPURE Z. Calling it a golf shoe for the "competitive purist," Adidas designed its new footwear to match the streamlined, minimalist elegance of its adiPURE golf clothing collection, which debuted earlier this year.

The shoes have the soft, comfy look of custom leather footwear but are also quite sleek and modern. This is a rare case in which the "form follows function" mantra of modernist design seems to actually yield something beautiful. These are shoes with an athletic, sneaker-based performance look, but they seem to rival the best of the traditional leather-soled golf shoes in esthetic appeal.

They also contain up-to-the-moment technologies, including the advanced Thintech, low-profile design, which brings the golfer closer to the ground for better stability, and a 10-spike configuration for superior perimeter grip. Only premium, hand-finished leathers are used throughout, according to the company, giving the shoes a superior feel and glovelike fit.

The adiPURE Zs come with a two-year waterproof warranty. Cost: $250. Available at retailers this month.
