Jim Furyk on Jacksonville, Fla.

Why Jacksonville...
I grew up in a small Pennsylvania town, and that's the kind of place I'm comfortable in. Jacksonville's a medium-sized city with no traffic and lots of water. We've got the Saint Johns River, the Intercoastal Waterway and that big old ocean right outside our doors. It's great.

Favorite public courses...
The TPC at Sawgrass (904-273-3235) is a must-play because everyone wants a shot at the island green at 17. That's the one everyone who brings their sticks is determined to play and with good reason. It's a lot of fun. But it is not my favorite. I like The Ponte Vedra Inn & Club and The Lodge & Club (800-234-7842), sister properties that share the Ocean and Lagoon courses. The Atlantic winds are always gusting at the Ocean Course and that makes the par-3 ninth, known as the first true island green, especially tricky. The Lagoon Course is tight and fun, and the greens have a lot going on. And try to get invited to play Pablo Creek (904-992-6900). It's an exclusive Fazio club with a really small membership. It's my favorite in town.

How to play that hole...
People always ask me how to play the 17th at Sawgrass and how they can birdie or even ace it. I tell them that the best way is to not even try. Unlike when we play it, the greens will probably be pretty soft. Avoid the edges and play it smart for the center of the green. No, I've never aced it, but it doesn't own me, either. I do pretty well there, but I usually take my own advice and play safe.

Eat at...
The knock on Jacksonville is that there are no restaurants. Well, there are no chain restaurants. Instead, there are plenty of great local places that know how to cook up yellowfin tuna without mangling it. The Dolphin Depot (904-270-1424) in Jacksonville Beach has the best service, menus on chalkboards and dishes out a mouthwatering Vidalia striper. Dwight's Bistro (904-241-4496) is so small and unpretentious no tourist would ever find it. It's in a strip mall, but it's the best. I never order the same thing twice. Great wine list, too. Take the kids to Cruiser's Grill (904-270-0356) on 23rd Street. The burgers are unbelievable and the kids will love the cheese fries. And if you can't stand the thought of eating someplace that isn't in every other city, there's a Ruth's Chris (904-396-6200) right outside the gates of the TPC.

What to do...
Jacksonville has some of the best sport fishing in the whole world. The Kingfish Tournament in July draws as many as 1,000 boats that go as far as 70 miles out to sea. I love to fish the Saint Johns River for red fish, trout and tarpon.

Stay at...
The premier places are The Ponte Vedra Inn & Club and The Lodge & Club (800-234-7842). They are only a mile or so apart and you can't go wrong with either one. They have it all -- spas, boutique shops, fine restaurants and locations right on the beach. Staying at the Marriott Sawgrass Resort (800-457-4653) will give you access to both the TPC and Sawgrass Country Club, the former site of the Players Championship.
