Pasatiempo Golf Club
Santa Cruz, Calif.
6,511 yards, par 70; Green fees: $200;
Thankfully, the staff doesn't hound you when you pull into the lot. The driving range isn't the stuff of modern golf schools, but who cares? The short game matters most here, and there's a great putting green and practice bunker by the first tee.
PACE OF PLAY
Pasatiempo is semiprivate, and the members keep things moving and give you an earful if you don't. It also helps that tee times are spaced 10 minutes apart. Expect to wrap up in less than four and a half hours.
If you don't have an in at Cypress Point or Augusta, this is your best chance to experience Alister MacKenzie's artistry. You'll love the lilting fairways and whitesand bunkers that track like paw prints around the course.
Two bills is top dollar, but Pasatiempo is a top-notch course. Considering its pedigree and location (between Monterey and Silicon Valley) the price is in line with a region where no one ever gets off cheap.
MacKenzie called this his favorite course, but that doesn't mean it's his best. Still, this is definitely subtle, beautiful golf. Pasatiempo is one of those rare courses that grows more appealing the more you play it.
