UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. (AP) — Reigning NCAA champion Scott Langley, the low amateur at the U.S. Open, has defeated Tim Jackson in the first round of match play at the U.S. Amateur.

Langley made a 15-foot birdie on the 19th hole Wednesday to defeat Jackson, who was the low amateur at the U.S. Senior Open last month and medalist at the U.S. Amateur a year ago.

Langley rallied from being 2 down after eight holes. He took a 1-up lead knocking a pitching wedge to 4 feet on the 17th, but Jackson won the 18th to force extra holes.

Defending champion Byeong-Hun An beat David Dannelly 3 and 2, while Hogan Award winner Nick Taylor lost 4 and 2 to Chian Kim.
