A foolproof 4-step guide on how to pack for your Bandon Dunes trip

December 10, 2019

Are you planning a spring trip out to one of our Top 100 Resorts, Bandon Dunes, and already starting to get excited? Well, it’s never too early to start planning on what you’ll pack for the trip. Our contributor Nathalie Filler made her first trip to Bandon Dunes earlier this year, and now, she’s sharing her advice for the rest of us hoping to follow in her footsteps out to Bandon.

1. Pack All Your Cold Weather Clothes

You’re going to want to pack your entire winter wardrobe when you travel to Bandon. Seriously, all of it.

OK, maybe not all of it.

The weather was all over the place during our visit. I packed plenty of layers, winter hats, rain hats, winter gloves, multiple pairs of golf shoes, multiple rain jackets, and vests. One day is absolutely poured on us. It wasn’t exactly ideal with 27 holes on the itinerary. I looked like I had jumped in a pool with all my rain gear on by the end of the day.

2. Don’t Bother With The Umbrella…

Notice how I didn’t say bring an umbrella? My advice is to bless the rains in Oregon. Rain at Bandon comes from all directions, you’re going to get soaked no matter what. Rather then spending your round fussing with an umbrella, finding a place to put it after each shot and trying to hold onto it so it doesn’t blow away — it’s more trouble than it’s worth, so you might as well just embrace it!

3. Invest In A Good Rain Suit, And Layer Up

But just because you’re not bringing an umbrella, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to stay dry. When I was there, it was coming down in buckets, but we also saw weather from the 40s to the 70s with fog to crystal clear skies. Prepare for it all as there’s a very good chance you’ll experience it all when it comes to the weather at Bandon. You’re likely to end up wet at some point so be prepared with back-up clothing to take turns drying things out by a fire. Get a good rain suit, think about your layering, double up on anything that can/will get wet and keep the rest of your wardrobe casual.

4. Leave The Fancy Outfits At Home

There isn’t all that much time where you won’t be wearing golf attire. It’s likely that you’ll be playing from sunrise to sunset to get the most out of your trip. Because of that you only really need to pack clothing for dinner. One of the things I enjoyed most about Bandon is its laid back, casual vibe. There’s no pressure to ever feel like you have to dress up. I packed a pair of jeans and several sweaters and I was good to go.
