Here’s how to take a winter golf getaway to a Top 100 Resort in Tucson, Ariz. for less than $1,350

December 27, 2019

Now that the holiday season is winding down, you may be understandably feeling the blues — especially if all you have to look forward to over the next few months is the same bleak, chilly weather without the fun and festive cheer. If this is the case for you, it’s high time you booked a weekend golf getaway, and Tuscon, Ariz. is the perfect destination. With average high temperatures in the 70s and 80s through April, Tucson offers a warm and sunny respite from the cold, in addition to beautiful scenery and stellar golf.

Plus — as if you need more convincing at this point — you can also stay at one of GOLF’s Top 100 Resorts, the JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort & Spa. Ready to go? Here’s how to do it for less than $1,350.

AIRFARE: ~$350

East coast starting points like JFK and BOS unfortunately have to endure a layover to get to Tucson’s airport (TUS), but you can get a direct flight from airports like ORD and LAX. Prices (via Kayak) are about $350 for a late February/early March round-trip itinerary, unless you’re coming from the west coast, which makes the airfare significantly cheaper.

GROUND TRANSPORTATION: ~$30

The Tucson airport is only 12.5 miles from the JW Marriott Resort, and an Uber will only set you back $25-$30 each way. That total becomes even less if you’re traveling with another person, so it’s pretty much a no-brainer. Forget the rental car this time around, and enjoy your on-demand chauffeur.

TOTAL SPEND: $350 + $30 = $380

LODGING: $479.22

With the JW Marriott’s “Stay Longer, Experience More” rate, you can spend three nights in a room with a king or two queen beds for a total of $958.44, inclusive of resort fees and taxes, which comes out to only $479.22 per person. Score!

TOTAL SPEND: $380 + $479.22 = $859.22

GREEN FEES: $279

There are three Arnold Palmer-designed nine-hole layouts to choose from at Starr Pass GC: the Rattler, the Roadrunner and the Coyote. A weekend round of 18 holes will set you back $179 per person, but if you play after 1:00, the price drops to $100 each. Let’s assume you’ll play two rounds: one in prime time, and the other in the off-peak afternoon.

TOTAL GREEN FEES: $279

TOTAL SPEND: $859.22 + $279 = $1,138.22

DINING: $200

Ah, dining. One of the best parts of most vacations. Your budget can quickly get away from you when you’re in holiday mode, though, so to avoid a total splurge-fest, follow the suggested outline below to keep your spending under control.

Arrival dinner: $40

Day 1 golf course lunch: $20

Day 1 dinner: $40

Day 2 golf course lunch: $20

TOTAL DINING SPEND: $200

TOTAL SPEND: $1,138.22 + $200 = $1,338.22

And there you have it! Three nights at a Top 100 Resort and two rounds of golf for less than $1,350! Ready to book? Happy travels!
