WGC-Bridgestone Invitational Live Blog: Live updates from Round 1 at Firestone

August 2, 2018
Tiger Woods watches a shot during the first round of the Bridgestone on Thursday.

The final WGC-Bridgestone Invitational is underway at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. Tiger Woods has won this event a record eight times, but he almost didn’t qualify. It took a T6 finish at the British Open at Carnoustie to move Woods to 50th in the World Ranking and earn him a spot in the field this week.

Woods tees off for the first round at 10:20 a.m. ET alongside Jason Day. Can Tiger put together a solid opening round to put himself in position to capture his first victory since 2013? Follow all the action below.

2:09 p.m. Missed it and knew it right away. Pushed it right and walked right after it. Tiger bogeys the 9th, his last hole, and that’s a four-under 66.

2:03 p.m. Woods’s layup from the sand finds the left rough. He’s still about 60 yards out and puts it to about 8 feet. Needs that for a bogey-free day.

1:56 p.m. Tiger misses the fairway right on 9. Had some choice words. Might be in the fairway bunker but we’ll see.

1:51 p.m. Tiger gets out of some trouble in the right rough, finds the green and two-putts for par. On to the 9th and his final hole of the day.

1:43 p.m. Tiger misses the fairway on the par-4 8th. Would be great to finish this round without a bogey. We’ll see what happens.

1:40 p.m. Woods drops in ANOTHER birdie. This one is from 20 feet on 7 and he’s five under. Two to play. Still no bogeys today. What a start here for Tiger.

1:36 p.m. Woods finds the green on the par-3 7th. About 20 feet coming for birdie.

1:32 p.m. Two-putt par for Woods. Still four under.

1:30 p.m. Kyle Stanley is the clubhouse leader. He fires a seven-under 63.

1:26 p.m. From 171 on the 6th, Tiger leaves it right of the pin about 20 feet. Not a bad shot. Birdie try coming.

1:21 p.m. Tiger back on track with a fairway on the 477-yard par-4 6th.

1:17 p.m. Downhill birdie putt coming for Tiger from about 15 feet…boom. First birdie of his second nine and he’s four under now. Little left-to-right break. Great putt.

1:13 p.m. Par-3 5th hole playing 181 yards, and Tiger with a good one here. About 15 feet or so coming for birdie.

1:09 p.m. Tiger with a great lag putt on 4 and it’s another par.

1:05 p.m. Tiger is way right and behind a ShotLink tower. Finds the green but has a long, long putt coming up.

1:03 p.m. McIlroy birdies the 5th, and Rory is five under through 14.

12:58 p.m. Tiger rips driver on 4 and it goes way, way right. Another missed fairway. Let’s see what happens here.

12:56 p.m. Stanley still the leader. He’s seven under through 15. Leishman now five under and Koepka four under.

12:52 p.m. Tiger finds the greenside bunker on 3 and then blasts out to five inches. Tap-in par. Still three under.

12:46 p.m. Tiger has now missed four straight fairways. Misses again on the par-4 3rd.

12:43 p.m. On his first real par test of the day, Woods makes the seven-footer to remain at three under.

12:41 p.m. Tiger runs his birdie try well past and now has 6-7 feet for par. Hasn’t had this all day.

12:40 p.m. Day unhappy with his chip on 2, but he makes the birdie putt anyway to get to three under.

12:37 p.m. Tiger getting into a little trouble on 2. Second shot goes right and he chips onto the fringe. Will have about 20 feet or so for birdie.

12:30 p.m. Way left for Tiger on 2, a par 5, so not a good start on a hole that Rory almost just eagled.

12:24 p.m. It’s a par for Tiger on 1. Just missed it out right. Still three under.

12:21 p.m. Big Cat’s birdie putt on 18 below. Draino.

12:20 p.m. Good shot from Tiger on 1. Rolls just past the pin and is a couple of inches onto the fringe.

12:16 p.m. Woods hits iron off the tee on 1, but it rolls barely into the rough. Tough break.

12:11 p.m. So Woods makes the turn in three-under 32 and is currently four back of Stanley, who is seven under. Two others at four under right now. Woods hits 6/7 fairways and 8/9 greens.

12:08 p.m. Tiger, on the fairway cut just a few inches off the green, DRAINS IT from 50 feet. What a birdie. He’s three under.

12:03 p.m. Tiger in the left rough, buried, but hits a little punch cut out and it rolls out short of the green. Good shot from there. First missed green of the day.

12:02 p.m. Jason Day finds the fairway though. He still hasn’t missed one.

12:01 p.m. Tiger pulls it left on 18. His first missed fairway of the day.

11:59 a.m. Rory birdies the 18th, his ninth hole of the day, and makes the turn in two under.

11:57 a.m. Tiger has 25 feet for birdie…and that’s a bad read. He hasn’t been close on a few mid-range/lag putts. Oh well. He makes par and is still at two under.

11:55 a.m. Day misses his 30-footer for birdie. Good roll and easy par. He’s still at two under.

11:51 a.m. From 174 on 17 Woods drops it in front of the flag. Good line. Another green. Ho-hum. Has about 15-20 feet for birdie.

11:49 a.m. Another fairway for Tiger. Hits iron off the tee at the par-4 17th.

11:44 a.m. And Tiger is down to two under. Makes a 10-footer for birdie on 16. Day makes par.

11:40 a.m. Day hit a spectator with his drive and then had to lay up. Finds the green but has a long birdie try coming. Tiger, from 94 yards…puts it to about 7-8 feet. He spun it back past the hole like Hideki did when he holed out.

11:36 a.m. Tiger lays it up and he’ll have a wedge into the green.

11:33 a.m. Tiger bombs it on the 652-yard par-5 16th, another fairway.

11:30 a.m. Defending champ Hideki Matsuyama holes out for eagle on the par-5 16th, and he’s now one under through seven holes.

11:28 a.m. From 11 1/2 feet on 15, Tiger pushes it right. Looks like he just read it wrong. Meanwhile, Kyle Stanley makes the turn after a six-under 29 on the front.

11:22 a.m. Tiger pumps it close on the 15th, and he’ll have another makable birdie putt coming.

11:19 a.m. Woods two putts and he’s still one under through five holes. Par-3 15th coming up, playing at about 217 yards.

11:15 a.m. Stanley increasing his lead. He’s five under through eight.

11:13 a.m. From 206 yards on the par-4 14th, Tiger finds the green but has a long putt coming. About 35 feet for birdie.

11:09 a.m. Tiger stripes it down the fairway on the 470-yard par-4 14th. He hasn’t missed a fairway yet (although had some help with a tree), and still hasn’t missed a green.

11:06 a.m. Tiger getting out-played by his playing partner, Jason Day, right now. Day makes birdie on 13 and he’s two under after four.

11:04 a.m. Tiger misses his birdie putt and knew it the whole time. Started a quick walk right after it. Taps in for par.

10:59 a.m. Tiger did in fact get a nice bounce and found the fairway. He hits a seven-iron from 203 and finds the green again. About 15 feet or so coming up for birdie.

10:55 a.m. Tiger goes right on the par-4 13th, but that might have hit a tree and gave him a nice bounce. We will see.

10:52 a.m. Woods is stalking his putt right now. He’s got 23 feet…left the whole way. Never turned. He marks and makes his par putt.

10:50 a.m. Jason Day rolls it close from 31 feet, and he’ll tap in for a two-putt par to stay at one under.

10:48 a.m. Here’s Tiger’s approach on 11, which led to his birdie.

10:46 a.m. From 185 on the par-3 12th, Tiger drops it on the green short of the pin. He’s got about 20 feet or so for birdie. Day finds the green too.

10:43 a.m. Day makes birdie from 6 feet, and Tiger is inside of that…Tiger knocks it in from inside 5 feet and he’s one under after two holes.

10:39 a.m. Tiger from 135 drops it close again. Inside 8 feet and another birdie try coming.

10:37 a.m. Kyle Stanley is your (very) early Thursday morning leader. He’s three under through five.

10:34 a.m. On the tee at the par-4 11th, Tiger hits driver and it’s straight down the middle.

10:31 a.m. Tigers leaves it on the edge from 7 feet. Disappointing start for him to not convert there. Meanwhile Rory birdies the 11th, his second hole of the day, and he’s one under.

10:26 a.m. Tiger sticks it close on 10 and he’s going to have an early birdie try.

10:20 a.m. Tiger is back at Firestone. What a sight this is. He finds the fairway on the par-4 10th, and playing partner Jason Day bangs driver down the middle. We are off!
