Tiger Woods: I wouldn’t have won one point for U.S. team in Ryder Cup

An injured Tiger Woods doesn’t think he could have won a point for the U.S. Ryder Cup team next month at Gleneagles, further reaffirming his decision to put down his clubs for a few months.

In an interview with Sky Sports News, Woods explained his reasoning behind withdrawing his name for a spot on the U.S. team. After Woods missed the cut at this year’s PGA Championship at Valhalla, and withdrew from the final round at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational — one of the Tour's most lucrative tournaments, which he's won eight times — his doctors said he shouldn’t continue to play or practice.

“When your name is called you have to be able to go out there and get a point and I just didn’t feel like I could be ready enough to get a point,” Woods said to Sky Sports News. “With that being said it was time to shut it down, get stronger, get more explosive again and get back for next year.”

Woods has struggled this season after attempting a comeback from back surgery in March. Instead of heading to the range, Woods will be working in the gym to build up his strength.

“It’s one of the things that when I took that fall at Firestone No. 2, I hadn’t done any agility work, so that’s part of the deal,” Woods told the press at a Nike event in New Jersey earlier this week, referring to when he injured his back at WGC-Bridgestone.

Woods has cleared his schedule until his own charity event, the World Challenge at Isleworth in Orlando, which takes place the first week of December.
