Steve Williams: Golfers Take Themselves Too Seriously

January 19, 2016

Steve Williams says golfers need to chill out.

In an interview with The New Zealand Herald, the notoriously feisty caddie confirmed Kevin Na’s recent account of his dispute with Williams at the 2014 Deutsche Bank Championship. Williams didn’t apologize, though; he took another jab instead.

“It’s a serious business but they need to stop taking themselves so seriously,” he said, adding that Na’s slow play had disturbed the rhythm of the other players in the group.

Sports Illustrated senior writer Alan Shipnuck’s recent profile of Na had golf fans buzzing over Na’s account of a confrontation he had with Williams.

According to Na, Williams lashed out at Na for his poor play after a round with Williams’ boss, Adam Scott, forcing a Tour official stepped in to break it up.

“Do you ever watch a bad movie again and again?” Williams asked Na. “That’s what you are, Kevin, a bad movie. I never want to see you play again.”

Williams plans to caddie for Scott in as many as 10 tournaments in 2016.
