Adam Scott won the 2016 WGC-Cadillac Championship Sunday at Doral, but it wasn’t without a few bumps in the road.
On the short par-4 16th hole, Scott drove the ball into the greenside bunker. With a one-shot lead, all he needed to do was get up-and-down for birdie and he could walk to the 17th hole with a commanding two-shot lead.
Instead, he flubbed the shot out of the sand nearly into the adjacent bunker. The worst part for Scott? He did it in front of short-game wizard Phil Mickelson–who was still trying to catch Scott.
“I was so embarrassed to do that playing with Phil Mickelson,” Scott told NBC/Golf Channel. “I mean, he would be lipping it out or holing it, and I’m shanking it nearly into the next bunker. It shocked me a bit. I just tried to be too fancy and probably showing off in front of Phil a little bit.”
At least Scott got the last name … and the trophy.
