For the first time in two years, Rory McIlroy has slipped below the third position in the Official World Golf Rankings. Dustin Johnson’s U.S. Open win (and McIlroy’s missed cut) propelled Johnson to the third spot, while Rory dropped to fourth.

McIlroy hasn’t been outside the top three since July 2014. Victories at the PGA and the British Open had catapulted him from 8th place to 2nd.

After a disappointing performance at Oakmont, where he’d arrived as a favorite to win, McIlroy said that his game had been off all week.

The “Big Three” anointed by the press last year all faltered at the 2016 U.S. Open, with the exception of Jason Day, who battled back from a 76 in the first round to finish T8 in the tournament.
