PONTE VEDRE, Fla. — Steve Mata, former vice president of Tour operations for Titleist, is the eBay seller who listed the Titleist irons purportedly used by Tiger Woods to win the “Tiger Slam” in 2000-2001, according to USA Today.
Mata has yet to receive an opening bid for the irons, for which he’s asking $250,000. A Tour official contacted Woods about the eBay sale and Woods denied that Mata had his “Tiger Slam” irons. “My clubs are at home,” Woods said.
However, Mata said that Woods gave him the irons he used in the “Tiger Slam.”
“I took two sets of clubs to him that I had been working on. Tiger said, ‘I like these. You take those.’ “
Mata said he told Woods: “You know what these are? He said, ‘Take them and keep them.’
“They’ve been in my attic for a long time,” Mata said. “Times are tough.”
Mata told USA Today that he has been unemployed for 17 months.
“I have to think about what’s best for my family,” he said.
Woods played Titleist irons when he turned pro in 1996. He switched to Nike irons in 2002.
