The slogging, five hour golf round has an official competitor in Europe: the R&A.
The R&A announced a new 9-hole competition Wednesday to be played the weekend before the British Open at Royal Troon. The event will also include “handicap purposes” to include various levels of amateurs golfers, 30 of which will take part in this initial event.
Two-time British Open Champion Padraig Harrington is a proponent of the new competition.
“For regular amateur golfers to be able to play The Open venue in championship condition immediately before the best players in the world is a fantastic initiative,” Harrington said. “I’m sure this new competitive format will encourage more people to get out on the golf course.”
Players (men, women, boys and girls) can qualify via 13 regional qualifying events held at various golf clubs in Ireland and Great Britain.
