Louis Oosthuizen Recalls the Time He Shot a 57 at His Home Course

June 7, 2016

You’ve heard of golf’s 59 Club? Louis Oosthuizen is a member of an even more exclusive fraternity.

The 57 Club.

In December 2002, Oosthuizen says he shot a 57 at his home club in South Africa in a round with his friends. “I took all their money,” he told Jessica Marksbury on GOLF LIVE this week.

The 2010 British Open champion said he made two eagles and 11 birdies in the legendary round at Mossel Bay Golf Club and miraculously saved par on a hole that he thought he’d bungled.

“On the 14th hole, I hit one in the bush…I thought, ‘There it goes,’ ” he said, referring to his chance to break 60. But then they found the ball, in a freshly cleared area.

“I had a perfect swing and I could see the green,” he said.

After his group returned to the clubhouse, Oothuizen says he had a hard time convincing people that the score was real. “It was one of those where no one believed you,” he said.
