As soon as Rory McIlroy made it clear he was playing in the PGA Championship, the battle between him and Jordan Spieth became the biggest storyline entering the tournament.
In Friday’s second round they are showing why, answering each other blow for blow. Not long after Spieth holed out for birdie from the bunker on 18, McIlroy chipped in for eagle on the second hole (they started on No. 10).
Spieth’s birdie was particularly timely on the long par-4 18th, which has crushed players all week. It moved him to 3-under for the tournament and put him three shots ahead of McIlroy after the world No. 1 double-bogeyed the hole and fell to even par. McIlroy’s bounceback eagle then moved him to 2-under.
