Harrington redeems himself in playoff after a disastrous 18th; another heartbreak for Garcia

After Padraig Harrington double-bogeyed No. 18 during the final round and Sergio Garcia bogeyed it, they entered a four-hole playoff to determine the winner of the British Open at Carnoustie.

Harrington took a two-shot lead on the first playoff hole and held on to win by a shot.

Garcia made bogey after hitting his second shot in a greenside bunker. Harrington made birdie. Harrington leads by two.

No. 16
248 yards, par 3
Garcia hit the flag with his tee shot but settled for a two-putt par. Harrington missed the green to the left but got up and down for par. Harrington leads by two.

No. 17
461 yards, par 4
Harrington and Garcia both hit their drives in the fairway. Harrington hit a beautiful second shot to about eight feet. Garcia found the green but had a longer birdie putt. Harrington missed his birdie try, and both made par. Harrington leads by two.

No. 18
499 yards, par 4
Harrington hit a hybrid off the tee and found the fairway. He hit a conservative second shot short of the Barry Burn. Garcia hit driver and found the rough, but he caught a decent lie and put his next on the green about 30 feet from the hole. Harrington pulled his third and was outside Garcia’s ball; he ran his par putt about five feet past the hole. Garcia two putted for par. Harrington made his bogey putt to win by one shot.
