Geoff Ogilvy (2) vs. Paul Casey (6) 9:20 a.m.
Broadcast: Golf Channel, 10 a.m. EST; NBC, 2 p.m. EST
This is pretty much the final you expected at the start of the week, right? Didn’t think so. Anyway, here’s how the final shapes up:
Casey didn’t play all that great on Saturday, but he didn’t need to. His first opponent, Sean O’Hair, basically handed him the match by taking a lengthy ride on the bogey train, at least in part because he suffered from food poisoning on Saturday night. In the afternoon, Casey needed only one birdie through 14 holes to build a 2-up lead against Ross Fisher.
Ogilvy, on the other hand, was a one-man blitzkrieg. Rory McIlroy was a handful, but Ogilvy was in control of the match and he withstood a blazing Irish finish. Against Stewart Cink, Ogilvy put the pedal to the metal on the back nine and closed out the match.
Based on current form, and on Ogilvy’s experience in sealing the deal in big tournaments (see Winged Foot, Doral and La Costa), he is the clear choice to win his second Match Play title. It’s 36 holes, and anything can happen in match play, but I see more happening for Ogilvy than for Casey.
