Amateur Nick Hardy did not have the kind of U.S. Open performance he probably envisioned earlier this week. A three-over 73 on Saturday left the 20-year-old at 10 over for the tournament, four shots above the cut line.
But it wasn’t all bad for Hardy and his family on Saturday. One of the great traditions of the U.S. Open is that it falls on Father’s Day weekend each year, and the young golfer made this timing count in 2016. Knowing he would likely miss the cut, Hardy gave his caddie a rest and had his dad carry his bag for the final two holes.
Hardy may not have made the cut as he did last year at Chambers Bay, but he still made a memory he and his father will not soon forget.
