Cameron Champ takes a commanding lead at Sanderson Farms Championship

October 27, 2018

Cameron Champ matched the low round of the day (8-under 64) to take a four-shot lead heading into the final round of the Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson, Miss.

The Tour rookie’s driving prowess is making him a standout among his fellow competitors, as he has a chance to claim his first Tour victory in only his second start of the season.

A look at Saturday’s scorecard reveals only one blemish: a bogey on the 6th hole, when a wayward approach found the left greenside bunker, and Champ failed to get it up and down.

No matter, though — Champ had birdied four of his first five holes at that point, and he didn’t let the bogey on the sixth slow him down. Five more birdies followed — including three in a row on Nos. 13-15. He even chipped in to save par on No. 12.

Canadian Corey Connors shot the other 64 on Saturday, in a valiant charge that saw him match Champ’s lead for a while. Connors is also seeking his first Tour victory.

Also in the mix: longtime pro D.J. Trahan, whose last PGA Tour victory was over a decade ago at the 2008 Bob Hop Chrysler Classic. A hole-out from the pine straw for eagle on the 17th helped launch him up the leaderboard into a tie for third with Shawn Stefani — five shots shy of Champ’s lead.
