Mayfair loses five balls in first round

Billy-mayfair-blog AUGUSTA, Ga.-It wasn't a good day for Billy Mayfair, 42, a veteran playing in his 12th Masters, but it could have been a lot worse. He birdied the 15th, 16th and 17th holes to salvage a five over 77.At least he got it to the house. After he hit it left into a stream hidden by the trees on the par-5 second hole, he had to take a drop. The slope there was so severe, neither he nor his caddie dared grab the dropped ball before it caromed into the creek. So Mayfair lost his original shot, then lost two more balls into the creek trying to drop. He was, however, able to salvage a par.He hit two more shots into the water on the back nine, at the 11th and 13th holes. He carried only two sleeves of new balls in his bag. He played the rest of the round with his only remaining new ball."I was worried I wasn't going to have enough golf balls to finish the round," Mayfair admitted. "When you lose three on one hole, that's not what you want."(Photo: Morry Gash/AP)
