SAN DIEGO — “Many people think I’m crazy,” Robert Karlsson told me a few years ago. “I try not to care too much.”
The fact that I’ve actually talked with Karlsson is relevant because, as I write this, the tall Swede has a share of the first-round lead at the U.S. Open. (He was 4-under through 11 holes.) Mike Kern, the half-pint golf writer for the Philadelphia Daily News, just cornered me in the press tent and demanded that I share my Karlsson insights.
I said, “Karlsson is deep. He’s something of an intellectual. He’s complex and tormented. He walks into the woods and meditates. Sometimes he wins, sometimes he chokes.”
Mike gave me a look. “You expect me to read your story, right?”
Exactly right. I wrote a profile about the Eurotour’s most thoughtful player a few years ago, and here it is, straight from the SI Vault.
