Nice guys win U.S. Opens

If you’re a Tiger Woods fan looking for someone to root for while your hero is on the shelf, you could do a lot worse than Jim Furyk.
The 2003 U.S. Open champion (and 2007 runner-up) was an unexpected but welcome guest at the Marlows’ home this Monday. Who are the Marlows? They are a Texas family who hung a “We Love Furyk” banner in their front yard for this week’s Crown Plaza Colonial tournament. Furyk thought so much of the gesture that he stopped by to thank them, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Furyk noticed the sign every day during the 2007 event because the Marlows live near Colonial, along Furyk’s driving route to the course."My family and I were flattered by it," Furyk said. "I planned on just stopping in and saying ‘hello’ at the end of the tournament, but the playoff pushed us back. So I kind of waved from the car as we drove by and thought I’d stop by and say ‘hello’ this year." And he didn’t just say hello. Furyk listened to 7-year-old Thomas Marlow practice the piano and gave golf tips to 5-year-old Henry Marlow. The only guy who missed out was the boys’ dad, Steven Marlow, whose idea it was to post the banner in the first place. He must have been out having a slice of pizza with Bruce Springsteen.
