Shinnecock Hills Golf Club -- Southampton, N.Y. The clubhouse was the first building designed and built as a golf clubhouse in the United States. Its architect, Stanford White, of McKim, Meade and White, was perhaps better known for his social escapades. The clubhouse was a success, being expanded twice with design by the architect before he was shot in 1906 by Harry Kendall Thaw after White had an affair with Thaw's wife, actress Evelyn Nesbit.

Augusta National Golf Club -- Augusta, Ga. The iconic image of the clubhouse is the original plantation house built in 1857. Remarkably, the building was already more than 70 years old when Bobby Jones selected the site and Alister MacKenzie planned the starting and finishing holes of the course to adjoin the plantation house, now the clubhouse.

Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club -- Lancashire, England Few clubhouses are a part of the course like that at Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club. For well over a century, opening in 1898, the clubhouse has formed the backdrop for the finishing hole, so close it seems to be in play.

Newport Country Club -- Newport, R.I. In 1895, Whitney Warren returned to the U.S. after his schooling in architecture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In his initial venture as a practicing architect, he beat out scores of his peers to win the commission for the design of the new clubhouse at the Newport Golf Club in Rhode Island.

Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews -- St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland St. Andrews boasts the most recognized clubhouse in the world. It embodies many of the characteristics specific to golf clubhouses, appearing stately in its setting, affording exceptional views of the course, and warmly housing the camaraderie of the members. Small touches, such as the golf-side balcony, a prominent clock to mark the tee time, and a decidedly masculine interior add to its authenticity.

Stoke Park -- Buckinghamshire, England The Stoke Park clubhouse, adapted from the historic mansion of 1790, was the setting for the James Bond film, "Goldfinger." A memorable scene featuring Bond, Goldfinger and OddJob took place on the 18th green with the façade of the clubhouse as the background.

Wentworth Club -- Virginia Water, Surrey, England The clubhouse at the Wentworth Club was originally a mansion built in the 1780s in the Romantic Gothic style. One hundred and forty years later, community developer Walter Tarrant retained H.S. "Harry" Colt, who would become a highly recognized golf course architect, to design the two championship courses wrapping around the house.

The Royal Blackheath Golf Club -- Eltham, London, England Royal Blackheath is the oldest golf club in England having celebrated its 400th anniversary in 2008. Its clubhouse is equally historic, being adapted from Eltham Lodge, built in 1664.

Valley Club of Montecito -- Santa Barbara, Calif. Designed by architect Carleton Monroe Winslow Sr., the handsome Norman clubhouse, an unusual look for the area, has been so revered by the members that its architecture has been essentially unchanged in 80 years.

Longue Vue Club -- Verona, Pa. The Longue Vue Club invites one to partake of its clubhouse like no other. The approach drive climbs the hill along the golf course. The clubhouse anchors the top behind the activity of the range and the undulating practice green. The drive, however, does not arrive at a porte cochere or even a front door. Rather it disappears into a handsome stone vault that is part of the clubhouse itself.
