Tiger Woods, following a rollover crash of an SUV near his home in Jupiter Island, Fla., was arrested Friday afternoon after the Martin County sheriff said he showed “signs of impairment.”
Neither Woods nor the driver of a pickup truck involved in the crash were injured, Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek said in a press conference outside the Jupiter Island Police Department, about two miles from the accident site. As of Friday evening, Woods was being held in the Martin County Jail.
Tiger Woods’ DUI arrest and car crash: Questions and answersBy: Nick Piastowski
Woods’ SUV, Budensiek said, had swerved to avoid a collision with a pickup truck, which was pulling a trailer and turning into a driveway on a two-lane road. Woods’ SUV flipped onto its driver side before skidding to a halt, where Woods climbed out through the passenger window. Police arrived at the accident scene at 2 p.m., and Budensiek said investigators said Woods was “not impaired on alcohol,” but “they believed it was some type of medication or drug,” leading to the arrest.
At the jail, Woods’ breathalyzer test showed zero trace of alcohol, but he refused a urinalysis test and he was charged with a DUI, property damage and a refusal to submit to a lawful test, all misdemeanors. Woods was to remain in the jail until 11 p.m., should he post bond.
In 2021, Woods was involved in a one-car crash outside of Los Angeles, sustained multiple injuries, and was hospitalized for three weeks following surgery. In a statement at the time, Woods “suffered significant orthopedic injuries to his right lower extremity that were treated during emergency surgery.” The injuries included “comminuted open fractures” in the tibia and fibula, requiring a rod to be inserted into the leg.
Prior to that, Woods had been involved in car incidents in November of 2009, when he crashed his SUV into a fire hydrant and tree outside of his home and was cited for careless driving; and May of 2017, when police found him asleep at the wheel of a vehicle parked in the middle of a street in Jupiter. He would later plead guilty to reckless driving.
On Tuesday, Woods played with his team in TGL, an indoor simulator-based league.
