Phil Mickelson ‘working on’ potential match with Tiger Woods

March 30, 2020

Professional golf has stopped at nearly every level due to the coronavirus.

Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods’ pause might be ending.

Mickelson’s response to a question on Twitter on Sunday night led to speculation about whether two of golf’s biggest stars would play a rematch of their 2018 “The Match,” with the PGA Tour is on hiatus through the middle of May.

“@TigerWoods @PhilMickelson do you think there is a chance you two go play a round mic’d up with one camera guy and just put it out there on a stream for people to watch?? We need live sports,” @YurkisMaximus tweeted.

About an hour later, Mickelson responded.

“Working on it,” he tweeted.

Another fan, @jonblumenthal, tweeted to Lefty: “Please don’t tease.”

“I don’t tease. I’m kinda a sure thing,” Mickelson tweeted back.

On the weekend when the WGC-Match Play event was to be decided, we may very well be seeing another high-stakes match soon.

In their 2019 event at Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas, Mickelson beat Woods on the 22nd hole, winning a $9 million prize. As late as last year, Mickelson said he was interested in playing again.

“I really enjoyed it,” Mickelson told the South China Morning Post. “I hope that Tiger and I will do more events like that in the future with partners, because we didn’t have enough talking between us and I think that a partner will have more interaction.

“(The partners) could be other athletes, that would bring a certain element, too.”
