Tiger Woods opened his 2019 PGA Tour season with a two-under 70 in the first round of the 2019 Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. His second round is in the books, and he shot another 70. At four under through 36 holes, he’ll play the weekend at Torrey Pines, where he’s an eight-time winner.
On Friday Woods played solid, if unspectacular, golf. He hit 13 greens in regulation, and finished with four birdies. A double bogey on 18 (his ninth) derailed a lower score, but Woods has 36 more holes to go. It should be a fun weekend.
Here’s the shot-by-shot recap of Woods’s second round:

(ALL TIMES ET / REFRESH THE PAGE FOR THE LATEST UPDATES)
5:18: Woods to close with a birdie…about 20 feet…and it just misses on the low side. He’ll have three feet to clean up for par.
5:10: Woods indeed lays up. He’ll have a wedge in from the center of the fairway.
5:05: On the 556-yard, par-5 ninth, Woods takes driver and sends it just left of the fairway, into the thick stuff on the right. The lie will determine if he has a shot at the green, or if he’ll lay up.
4:59: Woods for birdie, uphill putt…and it breaks off to the right. Mis-read it. He’ll head to the ninth, his final hole of the day, four under par.
4:55: At the 215-yard par-3 eighth, Woods makes a smooth swing and drops one to about 12 feet. Nice shot. That’s for birdie.
4:49: Woods shoves the birdie putt wide right. Might’ve simply mis-read it. It’ll be a disappointing par on this drivable par 4.
4:45: Woods tried to fly his blast from the bunker most of the way to the hole, and it drifts about 8 feet past. He’s got that left for a birdie.
4:41: On the 322-yard, par 4 7th, Woods take drive and goes for it…and his shot lands short of the putting surface, takes a big hop, and runs through the green into a back bunker. That was exciting. He’ll just have to get up and down from the sand for a birdie.
4:25: Woods’s chip is…oh wow, he NEARLY holed another one! It hits the back of the hole, while somehow missing most of the pin, and stays out. Just too much speed.
4:21: Woods from the first cut right of the fairway on 6…and he pulls this one as well. It lands on the green but trickles off. He’ll have to get up and down to save his par.
4:14: Uh, oh. It’s a power lip-out! Man, that hurts. His birdie streak ends, but Woods heads to the sixth hole at -4.
4:11: Woods chips it out of the spinach, down the hill and about 10 feet past the cup. He’ll have that for a birdie.
4:04: Woods from 225, ball below his feet…and he rips an iron, low, hooking and through the green. Looked like he wanted to play a cut, but caught the dreaded double-cross.
3:55: Woods on the par-5 5th hole… right down the middle, punctuated with a little club twirl. He’s feeling it right now.
3:48: Cutline update: it’s now moved to three under, so Woods, at -4, is one inside of it. He’s heading to No. 5 now.
3:45: Boom! The chip is in! Woods knocks it in for birdie to get to four under. Now two shots under the cut line with a handful of holes still to play. That one got the crowd fired up.
3:41: Tiger’s approach from the fairway on No. 4 is absolutely flushed…but it flies long and left. Up and down required from there.
3:30: Tiger’s birdie curls to the left..and…trundles..IN. That’s a much-needed birdie. Just the fourth birdie of the day at the third hold. He moves to three under.
3:24: Woods goes with a 5-wood on the 240-yard par-3 third. And he finds the center of the green. Safe, solid shot. About 30 feet for birdie.
3:17: Woods’s birdie putt trickles down the slope..and misses on the high side. Looked like he hit his line. It just didn’t break. That’ll be a par, and he’s still two under.
3:10: Woods’s approach shot doesn’t fade or draw an inch (according to TopTracer!) …and it settles about 7 feet from the cup. Outstanding shot. He’ll have that for birdie.
3:06: On the par-4 second, Woods rips a drive right down the middle. That’ll work.
3:03: Woods gets up and down to save par. He’s still -2.
3:00: Leaderboard update: Rose and Rahm are tied at the top at 10 under. Woods, suddenly, is right on the projected cut line of two under. He still has nine holes left on the gettable North Course, though. No need to panic yet.
2:58: Woods actually had an angle, albeit a strange one, to the first green. His iron out of the rough settles just short of the putting surface, but looks like it’s in the fringe. Could’ve been worse.
2:54: The pain continues. Woods snaps his tee shot on 1 way, way left of the fairway. Not OB, but we’ll see what kind of lie he has out there.
2:49: OUCH! Tiger lips out his bogey putt and will settle for an extremely disappointing double bogey at 18. That crooked number drops him back to even par for the day and -2 for the tournament.
2:44: Tiger got a bad break with his second shot: it plugged into the face of the bunker just under the lip, leaving an impossible chip. He takes a mighty swipe at it and is able to get it out of the sand at least. His next chip from the fringe nearly falls before running out several feet.
2:39 p.m. – Tiger’s got 179 left into the 18th green, and it looks good at first, but his ball trails off to the left and finds a greenside bunker.
2:35 p.m. – Following his birdie putt, Tiger crushes another drive down the middle of the 18th fairway. It looks like that wild drive at 17 was an outlier.
2:30 p.m. – FINALLY! Tiger rolls in his putt at 17 for his second birdie of the day, and the first one since his first hole of the day. That moves him to -2 on the day and -4 for the tournament. He’s six back now.
2:24 p.m. – Turns out that lay up worked well for Tiger. He sticks his short wedge shirt to about five feet. He’ll have that left for birdie.
2:21 p.m. – Thanks to his poor drive, Tiger is forced to lay up from the rough with his second shot at 17. He does and leaves himself with a wedge from the fairway.
2:15 p.m. – The 17th hole on the North Course is the second par 5 on the back nine. For the first time today, Tiger hits a really poor tee shot, blasting it way right where it appears to have hit a spectator.
2:13 p.m. – And Tiger makes his par putt at 16 to remain at -3.
2:09 p.m. – Tiger has a lengthy, downhill putt for birdie, and he hits a decent one about one foot passed the hole.
2:03 p.m. – Tiger hits another driver at the par-4 16th and, guess what? He crushed it down the middle of the fairway. He could really use an easy bird here.
1:58 p.m. – And once again, Tiger makes a clutch par save at 15, his longest one of the day. He remains -1 for the round and -3 for the tournament.
1:55 p.m. – Tiger nearly drains his 20-foot birdie putt, but it’s got way too much pace and runs a good 7 feet passed the hole.
1:49 p.m. – The elevated par-3 15th hole is playing just under 200 yards. Tiger sticks a nice one and will have a good look at birdie.
1:45 p.m. – Tiger cleans up for his fourth par in a row. He may not be going low yet, but he’s been rock solid on par saves so far.
1:42 p.m. – Tiger’s putt from the fringe at 14 won’t go . He’s got a short left for par.
1:38 p.m. – Yikes. Tiger flairs his approach wide left at 14. Not what he was hoping for there after that monster driver.
1:35 p.m. – A scene from the course today:
1:31 p.m. – Another par 4, and another fairway for Tiger. He crushes another drive down the middle of the fairway at 14.
1:28 p.m. – Tiger hits a nice putt from 12 feet but it catches the edge of the cup and lips out. He makes the comebacker for another par.
1:24 p.m. – Tiger’s approach from the rough at 13 is a good one. It finds the putting surface, and he will have a great look at another birdie.
1:16 p.m. – Next up is the 459-yard par-4 13th hole. Tiger hits driver and misses the fairway to the right.
1:12 p.m. – No harm, no foul. Despite two poor shots, Tiger knocks in his putt to save par. Still at -3.
1:09 p.m. – Tiger’s long birdie try at 12 runs about four feet past the hole. He’s got a knee-knocker left to save his par.
1:06 p.m. – At the seaside par-3 12th, Tiger hits a poor tee shot, but it finds the green and thanks to the slope he’s in decent position.
12:58 p.m. – Tiger has 8 feet left uphill at 11… and it just sneaks by the left side. He taps in for par to remain at -3.
12:54 p.m. – And Tiger keeps rolling on his second hole of the day. He sticks his approach shot from the fairway to inside 10 feet to set up a good chance for back-to-back birdies.
12:51 p.m. – Next up is the par-4 11th hole on the North Course. Tiger blasts his drive to the left side of the fairway.
12:47 p.m. – Tiger plays it safe with his long eagle try, rolling his ball right up close to give himself an easy opening birdie. With that, Woods moves to -3 for the tournament, seven shots off the lead.
12:46 p.m. – Finau hits a great sand shot, sticking it to just a foot or so. Schauffele misses his long birdie putt.
12:42 p.m. – Finau goes for the green at 10 but ends up in the front right bunker. Schauffele is forced to lay up with his second, but his third reaches the putting surface leaving him a long try for birdie.
12:38 p.m. – Tiger has 255 left for his second on the par 5, and he hits a beauty. It comes to rest on the putting surface, about 30 feet away. He’ll have that for eagle.
12:36 p.m. – Our featured group is waiting for the group in front of them to finish up on the 10th green before hitting their approaches. That group includes Rory McIlroy and Adam Scott.
12:35 p.m. – Schauffele and Finau miss the fairway as well. Tiger is in the best position in the group.
12:33 p.m. – It’s a driver for Tiger off the 10th tee, and it’s a good one that just sneaks into the first cut on the left side of the fairway.
12:29 p.m. – Tiger is once again playing alongside Xander Schauffele and Tony Finau today.
12:19 p.m. – Tiger is playing the North Course at Torrey Pines today, which played two strokes easier than the South in the first round.
12:15 p.m. – Tiger Woods begins his first round in just 15 minutes. Here’s a look at him prepping on the range with Rickie Fowler:
