Call it cocky, call it confident, but after a dismal 2013 season, Rory McIlroy is setting the bar high for his 2014 campaign.
“I feel like I am very close — I’m confident with my game and confident where it’s going,” McIlroy told the BBC. “I won a major in 2011 and 2012 but not in 2013, so I’ll try to make up for that with two this year.”
The former World No. 1 went winless on Tour in 2013, later admitting that he was distracted by several off-the-course issues — a controversial club change, breakup rumors, and a legal dispute with his former management company among them.
But a come-from-behind victory over 2013 Masters Champion Adam Scott at the Australian Open and a New Year’s Eve engagement to Danish professional tennis player Caroline Wozniacki seems to have put the 24-year-old back in a winning mood.
“Beating Adam Scott down there was really nice,” he said, “and while it doesn’t make up for the other weeks during the year, it gives me some momentum for 2014 … I didn’t have the greatest of seasons in 2013 but I feel like I’ll definitely make up for that in 2014.”
