When Florida State and Auburn play in the BCS National Championship game on Monday night, Jack Nicklaus will be in the stands cheering on Florida State and his grandson Nick O’Leary, the Seminoles’ star tight end.
In an interview with ESPN 106.3 in West Palm Beach, Nicklaus, who’s only missed on Florida State game in the last three seasons, said the team is better this year because the players are not focused on individual statistics, just winning.
“Last year they were a bunch of individuals worrying about how many passes they caught, how many yards they gained, how much they rushed for and so forth. This year Nick has not even mentioned it.”
Nicklaus also had some advice for his grandson: Be a leader.
“Your underclassmen are going to be looking up to you and looking for help and advice. Keep ’em level-headed and keep ’em toward their goal, and that’s to win the National Championship.”
