Welcome to GOLD, a bold and exciting new luxury lifestyle destination on GOLF.com.
If you’ve already browsed the site, then you have a sense for what we’re about: the game’s best experiences and destinations, resorts and real estate, toys and technology, and even food, drink and culture. (Don’t miss U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Davis Love III’s mouth-watering ranking of America’s best barbecue joints.) Our tagline says it all: Where the Game Meets the Good Life.
Golf lovers savor the good life in all sorts of ways. It’s 18 holes on a cliffside above the churning Pacific. It’s a castle stay in the Scottish Highlands. It’s avoiding security lines (and lost clubs!) by booking a Cessna for your next buddies’ trip. It’s rolling to the club — yup, in a Rolls. It’s also simpler pleasures, like a cold beer in the clubhouse, a slick new pair of sunglasses, or an irresistible app that makes the game more fun. Or perhaps, in your mind, it’s something else entirely, because ultimately luxury lies in the eye of the beholder.
“Different people define luxury in different ways,” says Richard Holtzman, vice president and managing director of the Montage Kapalua Bay, in Maui, Hawaii, where luxury abounds. “It’s a form of indulgence rather than necessity. Whether it is selecting a menu item, room category or type of car, having the opportunity to choose is a luxury.”
Adds Donald Trump, who has built a global brand around luxury: “People today are more demanding and there are more interests to address: fitness, dietary concerns, even pet accommodations. Everything has escalated. There is no room for complacency when it comes to serving our clients.”
Here at GOLD, we intend to cover the luxury lifestyle space with the same vigor, in a style that is lively, accessible and, above all, fun. You can expect lists and rankings, videos and galleries, plus long-form on some of the game’s most hottest destinations. Stay tuned in the coming weeks for a deep dive into the incomparable Bandon Dunes Resort, on the southern coast of Oregon.
We’re hopeful that your own opinions and expertise also will help fuel GOLD. In fact, they already have, in the form of our — well, your — inaugural Golfers’ Choice Awards, in which nearly 6,000 of you named your favorites in a whopping 24 resort and travel categories.
But we’re eager for you to contribute much more. To facilitate that process, we’re excited to introduce GOLD INSIDERS, a community of golf-savvy readers who will bolster the site with reviews and recommendations. Think of it as crowdsourcing for the best experiences in golf. To join our panel of golfers-in-the-know, simply complete this quick-and-easy introductory survey.
We have more surprises in store, so please bookmark golf.com/golf-gold and visit often. You might just find some inspiration to help you enrich your own definition of the good life.
