More than ever before, golfers are taking the time to get fit prior to purchasing a new driver or iron set. But when it comes to the putter, many still buy off the rack, assuming the head shape and length they’ve used for eons is still the best possible option.
With PXG’s latest Gen2 putter line, the manufacturer has placed an emphasis on fitting with the help of three hosel options, four different sole weights, and an adjustable fitting shaft designed to dial-in the proper length before purchasing. It should be noted the shaft is only a fitting tool and does not come with the retail version.
“Putts account for roughly 40 percent of shots taken, yet only a small percentage of golfers make an effort to be properly fitted,” said PXG founder and CEO Bob Parsons. “We’re working to change that stat.”
The putter lineup is comprised of eight different head models (Closer, Lucky “D,” Brandon, Mustang, Bat Attack, Mini Gunboat, Gunboat, and Operator) ranging from high-MOI mallets to more traditional Anser-style blades. Every putter in the lineup is offered in either a non-glare black or chrome finish and can be paired with a double bend, plumber’s neck, or heel-shafted hosel configuration.
While the three neck options are common, PXG is essentially taking customization a step further by affording golfers the ability to select a head with a hosel geared for their stroke preferences, regardless of head shape.
Each Gen2 head is 100-percent milled with a new variable-sized, pyramid face pattern that grips the cover of the ball to generate consistent launch and roll characteristics. The pyramid design varies in size across the entire face, with the highest pattern density around the center, to minimize distance loss on mishits.
The large plugs in the sole are comprised of heavier tungsten and lighter titanium to influence head weight and bias. Depending on head weight preferences, golfers have the opportunity to choose from interchangeable 5-, 10-, 15- and 20-gram weights. With more weight ports in the sole, PXG was able to remove the visible weights that lined the Gen1 head at address, giving the Gen2 a cleaner overall look in the playing position.
