PARAMUS, N.J. — PGA Tour pros get all kinds of perks. Free clothes, free shoes, and — usually — free clubs. But Tyrrell Hatton, determined to find a spark, spent his own hard-earned cash on a new putter at Golf Galaxy Saturday night, and it worked: he posted a seven-under 64 in the final round of The Northern Trust.
Hatton hit 14 of 18 greens on Saturday but made just two birdies and struggled all day with the shortest club in his bag. His -3.34 strokes gained putting was the worst in the field for the day. “Tee to green was fine just can’t find the hole,” Hatton tweeted after his round.
Never good sticking it in reverse on moving day!
Tee to green was fine just can’t find the hole ?
Need a good day tomorrow if I’m going to go any further in these playoffs ?

But the Saturday 73 was nothing a trip to the local Paramus, N.J. Golf Galaxy couldn’t fix. Hatton wasted no time in taking a trip to the local outpost to pick up a new Ping model. He finished his third round at roughly 4 p.m.; at 4:59 p.m., he was the owner of a new putter, according to the receipt he posted on Twitter. Hatton dropped $172 on the fresh wand, which broke down to $149 for the putter, $12.99 for a grip and $10.73 in sales tax.
On Sunday, Hatton proved it to be a wise purchase. He gained nearly three strokes on the field with his putting alone and fired the day’s best round. In the process, Hatton moved into the top 20 for the week and assured his presence in next week’s playoff event. He took to Twitter after the round to crow about “the best $172 I’ve ever spent.”
Well that’s the best $172 I’ve ever spent ???
Was so nice to hole some putts again today, new putter worked it’s magic!
-7 64 to finish the week ??

Hatton began the day in a share of 58th place, which would have earned him just under $20,000 in prize money. His 40-spot leap assured he would earn roughly $100,000 more. That’s a heck of an investment.
