Justin Timberlake is bringing a new kind of star power to Pebble Beach.
The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am is used to being overrun with celebrities taking a break from their day jobs to hack it around the beautiful Monterey Peninsula — all while their Tour pro partners struggle to remain focused. Only the rare figure really gets the crowd going (hello, Bill Murray).
But Timberlake, playing alongside Justin Rose, inspired hundreds of predominantly young, female fans to line the fairways at Spyglass Hill — fans who otherwise wouldn’t even think about attending a golf tournament.
“I’ve never seen a demographic like that on a golf course where you’re sort of running the gauntlet from one tee to the other. Everyone was under 21 and 80 percent female,” Rose said. “I said, ‘OK, that moved the needle a little bit there.'”
At one point, Timberlake spotted a fan with a guitar in the gallery. The music star spontaneously grabbed the instrument and proceeded to serenade everyone within ear shot.
Neither the performance nor the multitude of fans proved to be overly distracting to Rose, as he went on to shoot a six-under 66 to get within a couple shots of the lead.
