WATCH: Tony Finau, Lexi Thompson face off in match using only one club

December 6, 2018

This week’s premier golf event is the QBE Shootout, featuring two-player teams competing over a scramble format for the grand prize. One of the most-watched tandems will be Tony Finau and Lexi Thompson. Before working together for a win, Tony and Lexi decided to compete against one another. The catch? The match would last one hole, and each pro could only use one club.

Deemed the “One-Club Challenge,” the match took place on an unnamed 362-yard, par-4 at Tiburon Golf Club in Florida. The players open the video by announcing their choice of club. Thompson picks a 6-iron, explaining that she hits it 180 and should be able to reach in two. Finau makes a similar decision, but only after receiving an assist from his competitor. Finau originally thought the hole was 462 yards, and picked a club accordingly. But Lexi noticed his mistake before they started, and he switched to a trusty 9-iron.

Both players hit the fairway with their tee shots. As for the approach, Finau successfully stopped his ball on the putting surface, but Thompson missed the green to the left. Despite that, she hit an incredible chip with her 6-iron that nestled a few feet from the cup. You’ll have to watch the full video to find out won (and to watch both pros putt with irons), via the PGA Tour.
