LONDON (AP) — Europe named its first four players on Sunday for the team to face the United States in next month’s Solheim Cup.
Suzann Pettersen of Norway, Gwladys Nocera of France and Charley Hull and Melissa Reid of England took automatic places in the 12-member team. Reid secured her spot after finishing in a tie for fifth at the Tipsport Masters in the Czech Republic on Sunday, the final tournament of the qualifying race.
”I’m very impressed by Melissa’s performance,” Europe captain Carin Koch said in a statement. ”She knew what she had to do and she went out and did it. It’s a lot of pressure, knowing that you have to perform and it’s one of the toughest things in golf.”
Koch will complete her lineup on Aug. 25 when she names the next four automatic qualifiers from the women’s world rankings and her four wild cards.
The Solheim Cup will be played Sept. 18-20 at the St. Leon-Rot Golf Club in Germany.
Europe is looking for a third consecutive victory in the event after winning in Ireland in 2011 and a first success on U.S. soil, at the Colorado Golf Club, in 2013.
