Yonex EZONE XP Driver
Category: Max Game-Improvement Drivers
WE TESTED: 9°, 10.5° with Yonex EX300 graphite shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: Compared to previous models, the counterbalance design offers an extra 10 grams in the head and 20 more grams in the butt of the grip. The adjustable hosel allows you to increase or decrease loft by 1.5°. Tungsten in the grip raises the counterbalance for a higher launch. A heavier head (more mass at impact) is meant for longer drives.
DISTANCE: Reasonable overall length relative to others in this category; reliable, not the best but nowhere near the worst, either; mis-hits still get out there.
ACCURACY/FORGIVENESS: A pretty forgiving stick; testers see a consistently nice, high ball flight; most guys experience a controllable amount of side spin.
FEEL: Provides a nice, balanced feel throughout the swing; good stability at impact, time after time; brawny, powerful sensation at impact means rewarding feedback on well-hit shots.
PLAYABILITY: The club’s greatest strength—easy to hit with a capital E; high, repeating ball flight is the norm; more versatile than others tested in its class—draws and fades seem simple.
LOOK: Many testers like its orange and black paint job; crown graphics frame the ball and make squaring up the club easy.
A few guys get too much backspin to maximize distance; a handful of testers get a sharp, hollow feel and sound on mis-hits; orange-and-black head paired with the red shaft can be too loud and distracting.
BOTTOM LINE: Well-balanced performer with a unique, yet polarizing appearance.
