Wilson Staff FG Tour M3 Irons
Category: Better-Player Irons
Price: $799, steel; $899, graphite
WE TESTED: 4-GW with True Temper Dynamic Gold XP steel shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: The face thickness progresses throughout the set—thinner in the long irons for a greater trampoline effect, thicker in the short irons for maneuverability. Added mass in the heel and toe provides greater stability on longer shots.
PLAYABILITY: Simple, moderate ball flight out of almost any lie; values ease of use over workability, but slight draws and cuts are no problem for most testers.
ACCURACY/FORGIVENESS: A very forgiving iron — most bad swings get a full pardon; minimizes unwanted sidespin and masks misses; prioritizes forgiveness over precision.
DISTANCE CONTROL: Middle of the road in terms of pure length; added forgiveness makes for a tight dispersion overall; dependable and repeatable results.
FEEL: A soft, cushioned forging; it provides a light yet stable sensation through the swing; the cavity-back design keeps hands happy.
LOOK: A black, stealth-like finish gives the club a serious, all-business look; its cavity is well concealed at address; more of an offset, game-improvement shape than most other clubs in its class.
Finesse players should look elsewhere; lacks the subtlety of a true better-player’s iron — some testers want more precise feedback on both solid strikes and mis-hits, and a greater ability to properly execute partial shots; too much offset for some testers.
BOTTOM LINE: An easy-going forged iron that straddles the line between game-improvement and better-player categories; worth a look for players who put forgiveness ahead of feel.
