Wilson Staff FG Tour M3 Fairway Woods
Category: Better-Player Fairway Woods
WE TESTED: 13.5° (adjusts 12.5° to 15.5°), 15° (14° to 17°) and 17° (16° to 19°) with Aldila RIP Phenom 65 graphite shaft
KEY TECHNOLOGIES: Players dial in trajectory with loft adjustments and removable sole weights (3 grams, 7 grams or 11 grams). Lofts can be altered in this family from 12.5° to 19°, in 0.5° increments.
PLAYABILITY: The small clubhead works well from difficult lies; reasonable workability and a consistent, high ball flight; more of a straight hitter—with less maneuverability—than others in the test.
ACCURACY/FORGIVENESS: Several guys achieve consistent, straight shots with the FG Tour M3; there’s a decent amount of directional help on mediocre swings.
DISTANCE: Adequate length most of the time—similar to the fairway woods that testers normally play.
FEEL: Smooth sensation through the swing and at impact; the FG Tour M3 tells you immediately how you hit it, good or bad; slightly muted feel is acceptable.
LOOK: Refreshingly simple, minimalist appearance; testers like the compact clubhead and no-frills look; sets up nicely, like it can get through the most difficult lies.
There isn’t a “Wow!” factor in terms of distance, either on solid hits or on off-center strikes; some panelists could use a little added forgiveness on misses; a few guys prefer a bit more freedom to shape shots.
BOTTOM LINE: The FG Tour M3 is a competent fairway wood that’s more inclined to provide straight shots than out-of-this- world workability.
